Totnes is a thriving historic market town in south west Devon with the first castle being recorded in 907 AD. The area is blessed with some stunning scenery with the River Dart valley dominating the area. The town of Totnes was described as one of the best places to live in the south west by The Times and in the top 30 coolest places in Britain by the Sunday Times with British Airways inflight magazine describing it as one of the top 10 funkiest towns in the world.
Rainbow View is a short distance from the banks of the River Dart with the upper floors giving great views of the town nestled in the valley and the rolling hills beyond.
Excellent Transport Links
Despite being in Devon the town has great transport links to other parts of the UK. The mainline railway station is under a mile from Rainbow View and trains from here run to various parts of the UK including Plymouth, Bristol, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and up into Scotland to Aberdeen and Glasgow. There is also a heritage line regularly running steam trains through the stunning Dart Valley to Buckfastleigh from Totnes.
The road network in the area is excellent with a short drive to the A38 which connects the M5 and Plymouth. The A380 to the east which connects Totnes with Paignton and Newton Abbot has recently been upgraded.
There is a bus stop immediately outside Rainbow View offering a community bus service called ‘BOB’ within the town and surrounding rural area.
The town itself is usually very busy with a twice-weekly market demonstrating a very healthy local economy. Shopping mainly consists of independent shops rather than large chains and it is this fact that makes it so popular – a model that other towns are trying to replicate. An exception to this is the large Morrison’s, along with a fuel station offering competitively priced diesel and petrol. All the major supermarkets including Waitrose deliver to the site postcode with Lidl and Aldi a short drive away.
Countryside On Your Doorstep
Totnes is on the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with Dartmoor National Park to the north west of the town. The steam railway will take you through some of this countryside. Elsewhere locally there is an abundance of nature and wildlife reserves, castles and heritage sites, country houses and gardens, not to mention countless walks in the local countryside and picture postcard villages.
Living in Totnes
Totnes is a thriving, cosmopolitan town where many choose to raise their families in the picturesque area. The local primary school is rated as outstanding by Ofsted and there is a large and successful senior and separate sixth form college. Within a very short walk from Rainbow View residents can find cafes, tea room, traditional family pubs, bars and restaurants. The historic town centre has an abundance of art and cultural experiences.
